On Nov 13, 2009, a computer monitor displays a fragment of DNA being recorded by an automated research microscope in David C. Schwartz’s Laboratory for Molecular and Computational Genomics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Schwartz’s research team used such a microscope to capture and individually analyze nearly 80 million fragments as they optically mapped the DNA genome sequence of corn, also known as maize. Schwartz is a professor of genetics and chemistry.
