Research in the Baron Chanda's laboratory focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms that underlie the gating and function of ion channels. Ion channels serve as biological transistors and are responsible for electrical signaling throughout the phylogenetic tree of life. Our research combines cutting edge electrophysiological techniques with biophysical methods such as x-ray crystallography, single molecule dynamics and fluorescence spectroscopy. We are also actively involved in developing theory for model independent methods for analysis of ion channel gating mechanisms.
